Hopi Seed Jar with Birds by Rachel Sahmie

Four birds fly around the rim of this new seed jar by Rachel Sahmie. Rachel Sahmie is a fifth generation master potter, and is the great-great-granddaughter of the matriarch of modern Hopi pottery, Nampeyo (1856-1942). This design comes from an ancient Sikyatki seed jar in the Thomas Keam collection at the Peabody Museum (last photo), and is published on page 178 of Steve Elmore's book, "In Search of Nampeyo." Nampeyo used this design also, an example of which can be found on the same page. Rachel's jar was fired only a few weeks ago, and fired well with great tonality. It is clearly signed "Nampeyo Koo Loo" on the bottom, and measures 3.5" height and 6.75" diameter. An excellent Sikyatki Revival ceramic.
