Large Zia Dough Bowl, c. 1890

16 1/2" diameter

Great old Zia Dough bowl, c. 1890-1900, measuring 16 1/2" across and 9 1/2" height. Excellent condition with an original drying crack on the rim that the potter chose not to change. The bottom shows the older secondary red band, and the base looks like it was over a fire at some point. Good ethnographic example of a big bowl for mixing wheat for bread which they learned from the Spanish. The Hopis never needed such large ceramics for their corn products. Strong classic designs, some minor fire-clouding, a solid historic example of Zia pottery.
