Santa Clara Carved Redware Bowl, c. 1950
10.5 inches diameter
by Teresita NaranjoHere, the potter is carving her design into the body of the clay with great visual impact. She is concerned with clean lines, depth and a tan colored background slip to offset her carving. Pueblo pottery has clearly evolved beyond the ethnographic and the tourist curio as great expertise and time are now spent to create elaborate artistic effects. Now each potter has to carve out his or her own artistic career rather than simply follow the tribal techniques and styles of the past.
