Hopi Polychrome Jar

Hopi Polychrome Jar

11.5 inches diameter

by Rachel Sahmie

This jar has a form and design (a Crow Mother Kachina and birds) inspired by a jar in the Smithsonian permanent collection made by her great-great-grandmother, Nampeyo, around 1905. (Steve photographed six views of the piece and gave the photos to Rachel.) As Nampeyo was inspired by the prehistoric Sikyatki designs, so Rachel is inspired to create a masterpiece to honor her ancestors' work and life. The strength of pueblo pottery as an art form is that it continues to evolve while drawing upon the many rich sources of its past.
