Acoma Polychrome Storage Jar, c. 1970

Acoma Polychrome Storage Jar, c. 1970

16.5 inches diameter

by Jessie Garcia

This large storage jar is thinly coiled and molded. The multilayered slip has been brought almost to the bottom of the jar to create a large surface for elaborate decoration that neatly fills all of the available space. The heartline deer motif is almost lost in the busy arabesque of designs, each of which is carefully drawn and placed. The loose imprecision of the earlier prehistoric designs has been replaced with those same designs more artfully arranged. Unlike the early storage jars of the mid 19th century, no one would dare think of filling this large jar with water or corn.
