San Juan Storage Jar, c. 1860
23 inches diameter
by UnknownHere, we see the large size that potters were able to attain for purely functional purposes, storing corn, seeds, or water. The bulbous storage jars required much strength to coil and shape. After the arrival of the railroad in the early 1880's, a major trend in pottery making for the new tourist trade became the downsizing of the pieces themselves. Be sure to notice the raw clay, finely stone polished, around the mid-body to the base.
