Hopi Baskets
The last truly ethnographic baskets are made by the Hopi. There are two distinct styles; wicker baskets and coil baskets. Wicker baskets originated on 3rd Mesa and are made of rabbit brush, sumac and siwi. Coil baskets originated on 2nd Mesa and have a grass bundle foundation stitched and borderede with yucca. The colors are derived from analin dyes and sometimes white kaolin clay. In addition, the Hopi are known for their cradle boards and piki trays which is a flat basket in a rectangular form.
