Native American Fine Art

In the early 20th Century, Navajo and Pueblo artists began painting in watercolors and tempera on paper or board, most often depicting both their everyday routines and their special ceremonial occasions—these paintings are most often associated with the Dorothy Dunn School of Painting, which was an artistic movement founded in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the 1930s. This style had profound influence beyond the movement itself and it has continued to contribute to the aesthetics of contemporary Native American painters today. Paintings and drawings in our collections include offerings by noted artists: Julian Martinez, Raymond Naha, Percy Sandy, Michael Kabotie, Harrison Begay, and Darren Vigil Gray.
